Solution Focused Recovery from Mental Distress
Authors: Lucie Duncan, Rayya Ghul and Sarah Mousley
Published: BT Press
Topics:Brief Therapy and Occupational Therapy
This book has been written by three occupational therapists. It is a valuable resource for anybody working in the fields of mental health and disability, regardless of pro-fessional discipline. It is not only for occupational therapists but also for psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers and nurses.
It demonstrates a respectful, structured and realistically optimistic way of talking with troubled people so that their own strengths and resources are highlighted. This book introduces their Solution Focused Measure of Occupational Function.
They emphasise ways of eliciting the client’s ideas about what will improve matters rather than promoting the professional’s. As the writer Pascal said, ‘People are generally better persuaded by the reasons which they have themselves discovered than by those which have come into the minds of others’
This book is clearly written and almost completely free of jargon. It contains many useful case examples and suggestions for generative questions, and the authors have avoided the book becoming a therapy-by-numbers ‘cook-book’. I strongly recommend it.
