Solution focused brief therapy with women and children
Authors: Jane Lethem
Published: BT Press
Topics: Brief Therapy
Moved to Tears, Moved to Action presents a woman therapist’s view of Solution Focused Brief Therapy’s special value in working with women and children including those who have faced violence in the home, child sexual abuse and other traumatic childhood experiences.
The author draws on her experience of Solution Focused Brief Therapy with women and their children to look at case studies through the lens of gender. She illustrates the ways in which its conversational style, emphasis on revealing hidden strengths and potential for tackling social injustice makes Solution Focused Brief Therapy particularly valuable for women.
Jane Lethem works in London as a clinical psychologist with children, adolescents and their families; many of her clients are single parent mothers. She first became interested in Brief Therapy in the ’80s, was inspired by a short residency at the Mental Research Institute, Palo Alto in 1986 and joined the Brief Therapy Project at the Marlborough Family Service in 1990. With the influence of the founder members of the Brief Therapy Practice her therapeutic work, teaching and writing has moved increasingly towards solution focused work.
