Problem to Solution

Topics: Brief Therapy

Solution Focused Brief Therapy is a counselling and consultation model developed in the 1980s by Steve de Shazer, Insoo Kim Berg and their colleagues at the Brief Family Therapy Center in Milwaukee. It shows how apparently chronic problems can be quickly and effectively solved using clients’ own aptitudes and strengths.

Since the first edition of this book was published ten years ago, the authors have established the Brief Therapy Practice as the first solution focused brief therapy centre in the UK and it is now the biggest provider of solution focused brief therapy training in Europe.

In this revised edition the authors give a concise description of the model and take stock of the changes in their thinking and practice over the last decade. There are case studies showing the effectiveness of a solution focus with children, families and individuals with problems as diverse as depression, child protection and bulimia. A further case chapter deals with work in a mixed comprehensive school in central London.

The book makes an invaluable contribution to practice within both the statutory and voluntary sectors and is of special interest to all those wishing to develop an effective, economical and client-centred approach to their work.
